In the heart of North Kensington, Wornington Green was once an urban forest with more than 300 trees, a lovely park teeming with birds, and abundant wildlife. Through mismanagement and the poor planning involved in the development of Portobello Square, our green lung has been lost.
Today, only 64 mature trees still stand – and 45 of those are on death row.
The loss of these trees is devastating to an area with already high levels of air pollution, deprivation, and health inequality. We estimate the capital asset value of trees lost to be a staggering £20 million.
Trees take many decades to fully grow. The developer’s plan to replace mature trees with a small number of tiny saplings and semi-mature trees is entirely inadequate.
We call on Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to take the following actions to restore and protect an urban forest in North Kensington:

We call on Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to take the following actions to restore and protect an urban forest in North Kensington:
- To plant hundreds of trees in Golborne ward. Focused around Wornington Green, our urban forest will ripple out through the surrounding streets.
- To urgently halt the felling of any further mature trees as part of the Portobello Square development.
- To seek recompense from the developers to the value of lost trees +10%, as well as cost of maintenance.
- To work with us to co-design a beautiful and sustainable urban forest for North Kensington.
- Reduce pollution, improve air quality, and capture CO2
- Are homes for birds and wildlife
- Improve physical health and mental wellbeing
- Reduce flooding
- Promote community cohesion and leisure use of public spaces
- Create an attractive environment for shoppers and diners
- Increase house prices
- Make the world a better place

It resulted in residents concerns being listened to at a Scrutiny Committee Meeting at RBKC Council. And for the Council to issue a demand to Catalyst Housing to stop felling and consult with residents.
And we saved 2 trees!

The trees are beautiful and provide comfort to people living for years with the noise, mess and disruption of the building work. The plans can be changed, while half a century of growing can't.

Leearna Oliffe, 23 Nov 2020:
North Kensington is one of the most polluted areas in London and lifespans are dramatically impacted because of this compared to the South of the Borough. Undoubtedly The flyover A40 is largely responsible for this. As such, never has the need for trees that support the ecological balance of providing much needed oxygen into the atmosphere, been needed. As such, it makes no sense whatsoever to fell trees that actually assist the residents to literally breathe. RBKC MUST stop Catalyst from cutting these down.

Evelyn Preston, 26 Nov 2020: I live in the area and it's disgusting how the Council allows environmental damage in this part of the Borough. Shame on them
Craig Banks, 26 Nov 2020: "Small things in life give so much happiness whether that be the song from a bird as the sun rises or the colours that change every season. Once it's gone it's gone. Green is good and without it Earth has no future."

Guy Mannes-Abbott, 24 Nov 2020: It’s socially, politically and ecologically regressive, perhaps no surprise in the Borough. A clear opposing precedent exists in the E&C’s Heygate Estate to Elephant Park scheme which was forced to recognise canopy value of trees and restore any lost on at 4 or 5 to 1 basis, in 2010-2012 (1000 planted in hinterland since). The 43 then become 250 minimum: a significant copse. However, in 2020-21 we cannot afford to lose any of these maturing trees. No more.
